Trip Interruption and Cancellation Insurance
University travelers may consider purchasing trip cancellation and/or trip interruption insurance for university or personal travel. This insurance can reduce the financial risk associated with travel.
Trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance typically provides reimbursement for last-minute cancellations due to sickness, severe weather, or even security risks. During travel it can provide coverage for travel delays, missed connections, lost/stolen baggage, early departures due to unforeseen personal events, and more. It also includes optional add-on benefits (at higher cost) of Cancel For Any Reason and Interruption For Any Reason (CFAR/IFAR) where travelers have the option to cancel or interrupt their trip for any reason whatsoever and it would be covered by the insurance.
What You Need to Know Before Purchasing Trip Interruption and Cancellation Insurance
The university does not provide this kind of insurance, but it can be purchased independently. Several options for trip cancellation and/or trip interruption are available online. If interested, travelers can purchase coverage from any provider.
Before purchasing, travelers should compare insurance benefits and cost. Travelers should understand the covered reasons for cancellation and/or interruption in the basic plan; adding CFAR/IFAR will cover any reason at 75% reimbursement. Cost is usually based on total program costs to be insured, traveler’s age, and trip duration. If you consider purchasing trip interruption and cancellation insurance, with or without the CFAR/IFAR option, make sure you know the following for your travel or program:
- The terms of your housing contract, the cost of housing, and when deposits and expenses are owed for your housing.
- What is and is not covered
- Your airline’s flight cancellation refund policy.
- Your program’s cancellation and refund policies.
- CFAR
- Cancel for any reason
- IFAR
- Interrupt for any reason
